App Store Update: September 6

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Game Debuts

Avengers Initiative – ($6.99)

The Incredible Hulk smashes his way into the Infinity Blade-inspired fighting genre today with the launch of Avengers Initiative. He's the one playable hero so far – more are coming in later updates – but you can decide whether or not to get in on the ground floor with the great green brute by reading our written review, or checking out our video review right here:

Wild Blood – ($6.99)

The legend of King Arthur gets mashed up with God of War in this new action epic from Gameloft.

Drakerider – (Freemium, $20.99 Full Unlock)

Square Enix is at it again, giving iOS gamers the first taste of action for free to entice you into an expensive spend. Drakerider may well be worth the cash, though, so take a look at the trailer and decide whether you'd like to try, then buy:

Infinite Warrior – ($2.99)

Another way to fight against an endless wave of oncoming enemies, Empty Flask Games' Infinite Warrior alters the perspective to become pseudo-side-scrolling and emphasizes character customization.

Scorching Skies – ($4.99)

Overpower Games serves up the App Store's latest fix for flight combat fans.

VS. Racing 2 – ($0.99)

The developers at Maciek Drejak Labs crafted a winner with the first VS. Racing, which sped to support from over a million players after its debut last summer – in fact, you can grab it for free right now. So do that, then consider supporting the team by dropping a dollar on this freshly-debuted sequel.

Huebrix – ($0.99)

It's a challenge to fill each empty space with colors from a set of limited starting points in Huebrix, a new puzzler from Yellow Monkey. And if that sentence didn't explain it very well, check out the video to better understand:

Fart Cat! – ($0.99)

Um, well. I don't know that I really have much to say about this one. It's a game called "Fart Cat," so if that appeals to you, more power to you.

IQ Mission – ($0.99)

Eight different types of logic puzzles come together to test your IQ.

Monkey Slam – ($0.99)

You can always count on Chillingo to have something new and interesting ready to roll each Thursday, and this week it's Monkey Slam – a brick-breaker with vibrant, 3D visuals.

Bombshells: Hell's Belles – (Free)

And our last new release of the day puts a trio of "sexy pilots" into the cockpits of barrel-rolling fighter jets for some high-flying action.

Price Drops

Temple Run: Brave – (Free)

It's Disney and PIXAR's remix of Temple Run starring the bow-wielding redhead Princess Merida from this summer's hit movie Brave, and it's yours for free now.

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty – (Free)

Steve Rogers fans who don't want to wait for Cap to be added to the newly-launched Avengers Initiative game can wield the shield via this app instead, for free.

Space Harvest – (Free)

Isometric resource gathering in outer space, at no charge to you.

Fieldrunners – ($0.99)

If you've somehow still missed this bar-setting iOS RTS after its years in the App Store, you've got another chance to correct that mistake for less than a dollar today.

Updates

Minecraft: Pocket Edition – ($6.99)

Mojang continues to make progress in improving Minecraft's Pocket Edition, and the new Version 0.4.0 update adds beds that allow you to skip until dawn, chests for storing your piles of loot, a peaceful mode that removes the monsters and more.

Plants vs. Zombies – ($2.99)

PvZ continues to improve too after two and a half years, and its latest update brings fresh achievements and a new "Last Stand" set of levels that limits your access to sunlight.

That's all for now! If you haven't already, consider subscribing to the App Store Update via email. It's extra convenient!

App Store Update: September 5

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Game Debuts

Pocket Trucks – ($0.99)

In the tradition of titles like Trials HD and MotoHeroz comes Pocket Trucks, your latest place to send vehicles flying through side-scrolling stages full of loops and realistic physics. The 99 cent price is for launch only, so move fast before it jumps up.

IGN's App for Guild Wars 2 – (Free)

Are you already knee-deep in playing through the recently released Guild Wars 2? Well, our next app recommendation is one of our own – IGN's App for Guild Wars 2 brings together an interactive map, wiki access and more in one convenient place, making your iPad or iPhone the perfect traveling companion for your adventures through the land of Tyria.

Price Drops

Thor: Son of Asgard – (Free)

On Avengers withdrawal? Been too long since your last showing at the local theater? Get back into gear with Marvel's superhero team for free today by joining the God of Thunder in this iOS adventure.

Robber Rabbits! – (Free)

It's been a while since this puzzler starring a couple of bandit bunnies last came to our attention, and its latest content – a pack of Easter-themed levels – isn't exactly timely any more here in September. But when the game is free, we'll gladly ignore the calendar on go on another egg hunt. (There's a free iPad version for this one too.)

Reckless Racing 2 – (Free)

Check out the trailer below, then just try to keep yourself from zipping straight to the App Store to download this one for free.

Depict – (Free)

If you're a little burned out on Draw Something, try this alternative Pictionary homage for free.

Hunters: Episode One HD – ($0.99)

We highlighted Hunters 2 in our list of Price Drops yesterday, but don't miss the series' first installment at the same low 99 cent level.

Updates

King of Dragon Pass – ($9.99)

This interactive storytelling adventure (set in the world of HeroQuest) has received a new universal update. Enjoy crafting your own epic legend on either iPhone or iPad!

That's all for now! If you haven't already, consider subscribing to the App Store Update via email. It's extra convenient!

4 September 2012

App Store Update: September 4

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Game Debuts

The Tiny Bang Story – ($1.99)

A low-impact adventure full of brain-teasing puzzles, The Tiny Bang Story sends you on a quest to reassemble the shattered Tiny Planet after it gets hit by a meteor.

Price Drops

SmartGo Kifu – ($9.99)

Ranking as one of the most expensive apps in the Store for years, SmartGo Kifu normally sits at an intimidating price tag of 20 dollars. That nearly stratospheric asking price compared to most other apps has ensured that its intended audience of dedicated, serious Go players have been pretty much the only people to pay attention to it. It's half off right now, though, so maybe a few more people will want to take the plunge.

iStunt 2: Snowboard – (Free)

Then, on the other extreme of the App Store spectrum, we've got a freebie casual snowboarding design from Miniclip – about as far removed from 20-dollar Go as you can get.

OLO Game – (Free)

Also free right now is the visually minimalist OLO game, a combination of air hockey, shuffleboard and Olympic curling meant for casual multiplayer competition.

Hunters 2 – ($0.99)

And rounding out our first update of September is Hunters 2, a top-rated, top-down turn-based strategy design that's dropped down to just 20% of its normal price.

That's all for now! If you haven't already, consider subscribing to the App Store Update via email. It's extra convenient!

1 September 2012

App Store Update: Labor Day Weekend

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Game Debuts

WipeOut – ($1.99)

ABC's summertime game show is a guilty pleasure for sure, as countless hapless contestants get themselves beaten up and bounced off of big red balls in ridiculous obstacle courses. Its antics have now been adapted into a new game, so you can find out how high you can bounce off those same balls. (Without the accompanying embarrassment or physical pain.)

Total Recall - The Game - Episode 1 – ($1.99)

Though there's a new film with the same name currently running in theaters, this game kicks of a playable, episodic adaptation of the original movie starring good old Arnold in the lead role.

Final Fantasy Dimensions – (Free*)

Square Enix's homage to its classic era of 8- and 16-bit RPGs has finally gone live in the App Store, and though it shipped with a glitch that kept players from being able to access in-app purchases, that bug has now been fixed through a quick update push. Final Fantasy Dimensions Version 1.0.1 now works as intended, letting you download and play through the story's Prologue content for free and then only asking for cash if you want to progress further through Chapters 1 through 4. So give it a look, play the Prologue, and see for yourself whether you're up for the full experience.

The Walking Dead: Episode 2 - Starving for Help – ($4.99)

Telltale Games' adaptation of the popular zombiepocalypse comic/show continues with the App Store debut of Episode 2. This isn't a separate download from the first Walking Dead app, but rather an in-app purchase from that one central hub – you'll have to put down $4.99 to get into the action with Episode 1, then #2 is a second investment of a separate $4.99. Spoiler Warning! Don't watch this trailer if you haven't completed Episode 1 yet:

Price Drops

Dead Space for iPad – ($0.99)

Electronic Art's massive Labor Day sale is still going strong through this weekend, so make sure to check out anything published by EA – like, say, Dead Space for iPad – to take advantage of massive discounts down to $0.99.

Max Payne Mobile – ($0.99)

EA isn't the only company hoping to take advantage of this long weekend with some deep game discounts, though. Rockstar's getting in on the action too by knocking the app version of Max Payne down to that same price.

iBomber Defense Pacific – ($0.99)

And here's one of Chillingo's budget options going into your Labor Day, a tower defender inspired in part by World War II's Pacific Theater.

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation – ($0.99)

And then we have Gameloft's offering, its homage to the Call of Duty series, Modern Combat 3. This one earned an 8.5 "Great" rating and an Editor's Choice Award in our review last fall.

Virtua Tennis Challenge – ($0.99)

If you'd prefer to spend your dollar bill on something a bit more sporty, Sega's got you covered there.

Tilt to Live – ($0.99)

The title of this one should do a pretty good job of describing its gameplay for you. Also 99 cents right now.

Avernum: Escape from the Pit HD – ($4.99)

Normally priced at $9.99, Spiderweb Software's retro dungeon crawler has had its price slashed in half.

Drawn: The Painted Tower HD (Full) – ($2.99)

This under-the-radar point-and-click might never have caught your attention before, but it's one of our App Store favorites – it scored a 9.0 rating of "Amazing" and its own Editor's Choice Award in its review in late 2010. Give it a look, especially since its full version has now dropped all the way to $2.99 from its $9.99 starting point.

Diner Dash Deluxe – ($0.99)

Lastly, PlayFirst's prolific Diner Dash franchise. This version's offering up a free new restaurant to play once you take the 99 cent plunge for the app itself.

Updates

Pizza Boy – ($1.99)

A couple of in-game Updates to highlight to round out our App Store Update, starting with ACNE Play's Pizza Boy. This 16-bit-ish platformer now has Game Center support and new achievements to earn, courtesy of the launch of Version 1.2.

Plague Inc. – ($0.99)

Finally, the game that lets you direct an outbreak of global disease has been updated with a new infectious option, the Neurax Worm. Unleash it upon the world's unsuspecting population and laugh as the worm burrows into their brains. (Good fun, right?)

That's all for now! And I'd also like to apologize to you readers for the timing of this update – technical issues kept me from being able to get it delivered to you all on time yesterday. Rather than just skip a day and take it as a loss, though, I wanted to push through and make sure this Update got out to you – even if it's arriving on Saturday morning instead of Friday afternoon. So once again, sorry for the delay. And I hope your long weekend is enhanced by a new app or two. :)

If you haven't already, remember to subscribe to the App Store Update via email for extra convenience:
