Amnesia: The Dark Descent Sales Pass One Million

Frictional Games revealed today that nearly 1.4 million people have purchased Amnesia: The Dark Descent. According to a blog post from the developer, 710,000 copies of the game were sold directly, as well as sales from inclusions in the Humble Indie Bundle and Steam’s Potato Sack Reunion. Overall, the sales add up to 1,360,000 units in all.

“Despite that huge number of sales, what I think is more interesting is how good the monthly sales still are,” Frictional noted. “Not counting any discounts, the monthly full price sales lie at over 10,000 units. This means that less than every 5th minute someone in the world is buying a copy of Amnesia.”

Frictional also hinted at its next project, which is currently targeted for a 2014 release. “At Frictional Games our main concern is our new super secret project. We do not want to say much about this project yet, but we can disclose that it will be horror and that it will be first person,” the post reads. “One of the things I was most disappointed with in Amnesia was that it never really managed to deliver any deeper themes, but was more like a shallow fright-fest. For the new project we want to change that and really try and bring a certain theme to the front. Our hope is that this will create a very special experience, creating horror in a much more disturbing way.”

Frictional notes that “the game's current status is that we have pretty much all tech working, and have started to playtest the first parts. Still, a lot is up in the air and the current design is bound to change.”

Amnesia will continue with Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs later this year, which is in development by thechineseroom and produced by Frictional. For more on A Machine for Pigs, be sure to watch the debut trailer, and read all about Amnesia: Dark Descent in our list of the top 25 modern PC games.

Capcom: Sold Resident Evil 6 Copies Were "Stolen"

Copies of Resident Evil 6 that appeared for sale in Poland last week were stolen, Capcom has confirmed.

As reported, the copies on sale were of the German PS3 version which were purchased from a store in the Polish city of Poznan.

“

At this time, all we can add is that it would appear this unfortunate incident is limited to a small quantity of stolen copies of the German USK PlayStation 3 version of the game.

Capcom has released a statement addressing the incident, which reads, "Capcom is currently undertaking a thorough investigation into reports that Resident Evil 6 is being sold ahead of its official October 2 release date.

"At this time, all we can add is that it would appear this unfortunate incident is limited to a small quantity of stolen copies of the German USK PlayStation 3 version of the game."

It's not currently known how many copies of the title were sold, or what will happen to those that got out into the wild ahead of schedule. One copy has even turned up on eBay, with the seller claiming that he "bought the game legally".

While it's not known what action Capcom will decide to take at this time, it's usually a fairly risky move to decide to play a game ahead of launch, especially if you're one of a handful of people to do so. While Battlefield 3 was one of the more recent titles to suffer a massive leak after appearing early on torrent sites, most people who downloaded it got away without punishment due to the sheer volume of people involved.

When console games leak though, it tends to be easier for companies to track who's been playing them and then take action. Back in 2007, Halo 3 leaked online to Microsoft's intense chagrin. As a result, the Xbox Live accounts of any gamers found to have played the game were banned until the year 9999.

So despite the fact you may be able to get your hands on a copy of Resident Evil 6 a bit early, it's probably best to wait for the time being. To help quench your thirst, check out our countdown of 30 reasons you should be excited for the game's (legitimate) release.

Madden NFL 13 Sells 900,000 in 24 Hours

EA has announced that more than 900,000 copies of Madden NFL 13 were sold during the game’s first 24 hours on sale. According to EA, the figure marks the franchise’s best launch during this console generation, a rise of 7% on HD platforms compared to last year.

The franchise also saw its highest ever first day online usage, with peak simultaneous users up 28% over Madden NFL 12’s first day. “Madden NFL 13 is the most innovative entry the franchise has ever seen and we’re thrilled that fans have embraced it with such a huge first day,” said EA Sports executive vice president Andrew Wilson.

EA also noted that Madden has received 665,464 social interactions on Facebook and Twitter since launch and “has been mentioned on average every six seconds on Twitter.” It’s also seen good reviews, with EA mentioning nine scores of 90 or above, accounting for “the biggest single-year jump in critical acclaim for an EA Sports game in four years.”

Madden NFL 13 launched on August 28th. In addition to its new Infinity physics engine, this year's installment also adds new Connected Careers and Kinect voice controls. For a full rundown, check out our Madden NFL 13 review.

Dragon Commander, Original Sin stolen from Gamescom booth, $5000 bounty posted

Larian Games reported today that two of their titles were stolen right out from under their nose at their Gamescom 2012 demo booth. The PCs were carrying early copies of Divinity: Dragon Commander, and Divinity: Original Sin.

The developer has offered a $5000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of the thief. Fortunately, the PCs were backups so there are no worries that the primary code was stolen or that development was disrupted. The main worry right now seems to be a black eye for the company, as well as the fear that the early build could show up on torrent sites.

But it's not all terrible! At least this got their games in the headlines of the top gaming sites today! When truthfully, games like Dragon Commander and Original Sin probably would have been overlooked in the avalanche of amazing videos, announcements, and info coming out about the top games of the year.

This is not the first time this type of incident has happened at a video game trade show. Back at PAX East 2010 a young man tried to gank a copy of Breach from the demo floor, however he was tackled to the ground before he could leave the building. He eventually was tried and received probation.
