Emily Rose Director Will Beware the Night

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister) has signed on to direct Beware the Night from a script he co-wrote with Paul Boardman. Screen Gems will produce the film and is currently in negotiations with Disney for the rights.

TheWrap describes the story which follows a New York police officer tasked with investigating demon possessions, exorcisms and werewolves after dark. Casting has yet to begin, although Mark Wahlberg was reportedly being eyed for the leading role.

In addition to Emily Rose, Derrickson directed 2008's The Day the Earth Stood Still and penned the screenplay for the upcoming Devil's Knot.

RoboCop Director Denies Production Struggles

Last week, we heard from Fernando Meireilles that his close friend and fellow filmmaker Jose Padilha was going through "hell" on the set of his upcoming RoboCop reboot. However, Padilha plays down these claims in a recent interview with Brazilian newspaper Cinema em Cinema.

"I have a script I’m happy with and I got the cast I have picked," he said. "The director of photography is Lula Carvalho, my editor is Daniel Rezende (City of God, Elite Squad, The Tree of Life). I was even consulted for the selection of the producers."

As for the rumors of his bad time spent in pre-production, the director added, "We deal with those difficulties with coolness and familiarity."

So perhaps Padilha's hellish experience with the studio was a little bit exaggerated. On the other hand, as Latino Review points out, this could also just be the RoboCop helmer's own way of protecting himself.

Hold Your Horses on that Fourth Avatar

Remember back in June when James Cameron announced that he would be shooting three Avatar sequels simultaneously? Well, now it seems that the filmmaker may have been getting a little ahead of himself.

Indie Wire reports that Avatar 4 will not be a part of Cameron's back-to-back film shoot, according to producer Jon Landau. Additionally, it is still uncertain when production for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 will begin as the former is currently slated for release no earlier than 2015.

The delays carry over into Cameron's World of Avatar attraction at Disney's Animal Kingdom, which was announced around this time last year. Due to creative differences between Cameron and Disney's Imagineer development team, it seems as though we'll be waiting even longer on that project as well.

Paramount Saves Adam McKay's The Boys

Director Adam McKay's feature adaptation of The Boys may have been dropped by Columbia, but the Anchorman filmmaker confirms that the project has found a new home at Paramount.

When a fan of the Garth Ennis comic book expressed his dismay via Twitter that the film wasn't getting made, McKay responded with, "Actually Paramount picked it up and we're still developing."

The Boys centers on a group of CIA agents who are tasked with keeping any reckless superheroes in line.

James Gunn Chosen to Direct Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel has reportedly selected Super's James Gunn to direct Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Hollywood Reporter claims Gunn is the only filmmaker Marvel is now talking to about directing the sci-fi team flick slated for release August 1, 2014. THR says no deal is set yet with Gunn.

Other contenders are said to have included Bring It On's Peyton Reed (who was once attached to direct Fantastic Four way back when) and Half Nelson's Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.

"Marvel is said to like Gunn's sensibility and his ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror, a quality he shares with The Avengers director Joss Whedon," according to THR.

Gunn also wrote and directed Slither. As a screenwriter his credits includes the superhero comedy The Specials (in which he also acted), as well as Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, Tromeo and Juliet, Scooby Doo, and Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.
