Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online “On Hold” For Wii U

Ubisoft has confirmed that the Wii U version of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online has been temporarily put on hold. In an interview with VideoGamer, producer Theo Sanders discussed the team’s decision to focus “completely on the PC version.”

"As of right now, the entire Ghost Recon team is focused on the PC version only," Sanders said. "The Wii U version is on hold. If in the future we have an opportunity to address it again, we'll make future announcements.”

As for the notion that this development has something to do with Nintendo’s online plans or Wii U hardware issues, Sanders was quick to debunk such speculation. "It's not a reaction to anything specific happening to [Wii U]," he said. "It was a really fun, cool platform to develop for. But you realize once you launch an online service that it's an all-consuming effort, so we really wanted to have all hands on deck. It was the same dev team working on both SKUs, and [we] really wanted to focus on doing the PC version right.”

While this may be disappointing, don’t rule out the possibility of Ghost Recom Online hitting consoles sometime down the line. "It's hard to say how the future will go for Ghost Recon Online," Sanders said. "I think in the future as different platforms evolve towards service models and towards being really online-driven, community-driven platforms, then we'll definitely be looking at what our options are.”

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger Announced

Ubisoft has announced Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Set to hit Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC in early 2013, Gunslinger “is a real homage to the Wild West tales” that lets players “live the epic and violent journey of a ruthless bounty hunter onto the trail of the West’s most notorious outlaws.” Like previous entries in the franchise, Gunslinger is being developed by Techland.

Ubisoft says Gunslinger will unveil “the untold truth behind some of the greatest legends of the Old West,” including Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, Jesse James and more. The game will feature “ruthless, all out gun battles” and lets players use pistols and rifles to “unleash lethal combos” and “gun down multiple enemies in split seconds.” Players will also be able to choose specific gun fighting skills and “develop and acquire new shooting abilities to become the West’s finest gunslinger.”

Ubisoft hinted at a new Call of Juarez just yesterday via a teaser image. This will be the fourth game in the franchise, following Call of Juarez in 2007, Bound in Blood in 2009 and The Cartel in 2011.

No additional details on Call of Juarez: Gunslinger have been released, but keep an eye on the franchise’s official Facebook page for more info.

I am Alive PC release announced by Ubisoft

Ubisoft announced today in a press release that their survival horror title I am Alive will be expanding to PC later this year. The PC release will also introduce two new modes to the experience: Easy Mode and Replay Mode.

The former, as you might have guessed, aims to make the experience a bit more pleasant, allowing the player infinite retries and a smoother introduction to the experience. While Replay Mode allows players to replay levels to seek out new secrets and hidden items.

Originally released on Xbox Live Arcade earlier this year in March and introduced players to a very different kind of survival horror than the Resident Evil-esque fare the industry grew up on. Though occasionally frustrating and even dull, we found it to be a worthwhile experiencethanks mostly to how unique and unforgiving and realistic it is.

The announcement comes just a day after Ubisoft announced that their piracy rate on PC is close to 95%. Apparently, that astounding rate still isn't harming their ability to do business on the platform.

I Am Alive Coming to PC in September

Ubisoft's post-apocalyptic survival game I Am Alive will release on PC on September 13.

The title, which launched on XBLA and PSN earlier this year, will feature improved graphics along with two new modes.

The "easy" mode allows an infinite number of retries and gives players a smoother introduction to the game, while the "Replay" mode allows gamers to revisit previous missions to try and discover more secrets and treasures.

The game takes place in an America that has been decimated by an unspecified "Event". You play as a male survivor searching for his wife and daughter in his hometown of Haventon, whilst trying to survive the toxic ash and attacks from fellow survivors.

I Am Alive will be available for £11.99/$19.99/€14.99 on Ubishop, Steam and other digital retailers worldwide on September 13.

Ubisoft: PC has Piracy Rate of 93-95%, F2P the Future

Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot has revealed that the percentage of people who pay in free-to-play games is roughly the same as those who buy boxed games.

So high are the rates of piracy (5-7%), Ubisoft is actively looking to the F2P model as an important way of making money from the PC market going forward, especially in territories badly affected by piracy.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online is one of Ubisoft's latest titles to take advantage of this model.

"We want to develop the PC market quite a lot and F2P is really the way to do it," said Guillemot in an interview with GamesIndustry International. "The advantage of F2P is that we can get revenue from countries where we couldn't previously - places where our products were played but not bought. Now with F2P we gain revenue, which helps brands last longer.

“

Now with F2P we gain revenue, which helps brands last longer.

"It's a way to get closer to your customers, to make sure you have a revenue. On PC it's only around five to seven per cent of the players who pay for F2P, but normally on PC it's only about five to seven per cent who pay anyway, the rest is pirated. It's around a 93-95 per cent piracy rate, so it ends up at about the same percentage. The revenue we get from the people who play is more long term, so we can continue to bring content."

Ubisoft recently announced a range of F2P titles at Gamescom, including Anno Online, The Settlers Online, Silent Hunter Online, and Heroes of Might Heroes Online.

Is F2P really the future of PC gaming? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

What You Won't See in Assassin's Creed III

In December 2010, Ubisoft created a video that represented its ambitions for Assassin's Creed III - something known as target footage. Creative Director Alex Hutchinson insists that developers should always aim for exactly what they intend to ship, never over-estimating their capabilities or falling short of their own expectations. Hutchinson presented the Assassin's Creed III target gameplay render during his GDC Europe Keynote, and it was almost indistinguishable from what we've all seen from the near-finished game. In just a few short minutes, it establishes traversal and combat animation routines, the hunting mechanics, jumping through trees and climbing any cliff. But it isn't exactly Assassin's Creed III; a lot has changed along the way.

“

For a while we took the bow out of the game

"Some of the notable cuts from that footage include the idea of scalping," Hutchinson explained. It was something that was "historically defensible", but in the context of gameplay it was too gruesome and didn't serve much purpose for the character. For a while the bow was taken out of the game, too, because it wasn't historically supported enough to give Ubisoft the confidence to include it. Additional research eventually gave Assassin's Creed III's development team enough evidence to include it. There was originally a hook-blade as well, an extension of one of Ezio's tools, which you'd throw it at enemies to pull them toward you. "People on the team kept saying 'Get over here!' every time they used it," said Hutchinson. He took it out of the game, but a version of the device stayed in Assassin's Creed III -- you can hook enemies to yank them up tree branches.

Philadelphia was prototyped for Assassin's Creed III, but ultimately cut because "it just wasn't very much fun." Hutchinson said Philadelphia is "very, very flat, it's very, very rigid. The streets were too wide." It also would have represented the first "planned city" in the series -- Philadelphia was built on a grid, unlike the more unpredictable nature of past settings. Instead, Philly is a town you'll visit in cutscenes rather than suffer through in gameplay.

When it came to creating a main character, Hutchinson wanted a hero that could hang with Altair and Ezio. "I believe, even as someone who didn't work on [Assassin's Creed II], that Ezio is one of the best characters in games." Connor, therefore, had to be as iconic as Ezio and Altair. He was always intended to be Native American -- "We didn't want to make Mel Gibson from The Patriot fighting for America, nor did we want someone fighting for king and country -- but he wasn't always the guy we know now.

Early concepts deliberately went to artistic extremes. The "full on eagle outfit was never going to fly," Hutchinson said. In that particular image, Connor was decked out in wide-spreading feathers and had an an animal head for a hat. Ubisoft concepted him in all sorts of animal skins as well as minimalist robes before ultimately settling on subtle cultural twists on a classic white robe.
