Reel Anime 2012 Kicks Off Next Week

Madman's Reel Anime 2012 festival is kicking off next week in cinemas across Australia. It runs from September 13 - 26 and features four fantastic-looking films. Here's some info from Madman for each:

From Up On Poppy Hill

Set in Yokohama, From Up On Poppy Hill is a high school love story that takes place in the year before the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics. As the country begins to pick itself up from the devastation of the Second World War, the new generation struggles to move towards a prosperous future whilst trying not to lose the essence of their past. The film’s rich and vibrant animation captures the entrancing beauty of Yokohama’s harbour and lush surrounding hillsides and, with a soundtrack that draws inspiration from the finest music of the time, perfectly captures the thrills of young romance and the hope of a new dawn.

From Up On Poppy Hill is directed by Goro Miyazaki and comes from the acclaimed Studio Ghibli. Look out for IGN's review in the next few days.

Wolf Children

When Hana falls in love, it feels like a fairy tale. She starts a family and produces two beautiful children – Yuki (Snow), a girl, and Ame (Rain), a boy. But the family harbours a secret – their father is a ‘Wolf-Man’, half human and half wolf, and has passed his affliction on to his children. The family try to reside discreetly in a quiet corner of the city, but their joyful life is shattered when their father passes away. To live peacefully, Hana must make the difficult decision to move Yuki and Ame to a small town and surround them with nature.

Wolf Children is directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who you no doubt know from The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars.

Berserk - The Egg of the King

An epic action-adventure tale set against a dark, European-inspired medieval fantasy world, Berserk – The Egg of the King follows the story of Guts, a lone mercenary renowned for his ferocity and unmatched in a fight – especially when armed with his imposing sword, a towering blade as tall as he. His destiny is to eventually become ‘The Black Swordsman’ and he will face untold horrors in battle.

In this first film from The Golden Age Arc trilogy, Guts’ actions in combat capture the attention of Griffith, leader of the mercenary group ‘The Band of the Hawk’. Griffith soon moves to recruit Guts into their ranks, but despite a slew of victories and successes, Guts begins to questions Griffith’s true purpose, whose ambition may lead them both to a horrible fate.

Based on Kentaro Miura’s bestselling manga series – which has sold over 30 million copies worldwide – Berserk: The Golden Age Arc trilogy takes the franchise into a bold and exciting new direction, with cutting-edge animation, intricately detailed swordplay and a gripping storyline.

Berserk - The Egg of the King is made by Studio 4°C, which is known for feature films such as Mind Games and Tekkonkinkreet. It also produced shorts for the Batman anthology Gotham Knight, Halo Legends and The Animatrix.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices

Having lived a lonely life ever since her father’s passing, Asuna spends her days listening to the otherworldly sounds of a crystal radio, left to her as a memento. Exploring the mountains near her home, Asuna is attacked by a strange beast. A mysterious stranger steps in to save her life, however their acquaintance is tragically cut short when the boy is killed. But when Asuna discovers a gateway to another world, she is overjoyed at the prospect of seeing him again. Alongside a band of friends who hold feelings of hope for their lost ones, Asuna undertakes a journey into a land of legends.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices is directed by Makoto Shinkai, the man responsible for the independently-produced Voices of a Distant Star, as well as The Place Promised in Our Early Days and 5 Centimeters per Second.

Joe Danger 2: The Movie release date revealed

Hello Games announced today that they are planning to release their upcoming follow-up to 2010's Joe Danger on September 14, 2012 on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Joe Danger 2: The Movie drastically expands on the formula of the original title as Mr. Danger is given a plethora of new vehicles to ride after he finally gains his justly deserved national fame and begins shooting his own film.

The original title was one of the best downloadable games to be released in 2010, and can best be summed up as 2D Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on a motorcycle. It had its flaws (mainly a lack of variety,) and we're looking forward to seeing if Hello Games can solve these issues in the sequel.

IGN's Autumn 2012 Movie Preview

Now that the summer is over (so long, superheroes!) we look ahead to what IGN-centric films are on the horizon for September through November. Zombies, demons, the return of 007, and the swan song of Teams Edward and Jacob are just some of what's in store for filmgoers. Here are all the movies you might want to catch this season!

Release Date: September 7 (US): April 6 (UK); May 21 (AU)

Studio: Summit

On the surface, there’s nothing too original about the Cold Light of Day plot, which has armed and distraught future Superman Henry Cavill discovering the secrets of his CIA agent father after his entire family is kidnapped. But when you throw into the mix the fact that said father is played by Bruce Willis, and his partner is Sigourney Weaver, then this action thriller - directed by JCVD helmer Mabrouk El Mechri - doesn’t look quite so bland.

REC3: Genesis

Release Date: September 7 (US): March 30 (UK); TBD (AU)

Studio: Magnet

The third instalment in the [REC] franchise has provoked a pretty mixed reaction. Pitched as a comedy-horror, critics and fans of the original have expressed disappointment at the fact that the film strays from the serious overtones of its predecessors. That doesn’t mean it’s not good fun, but maybe forewarn yourself with our review before buying a ticket.

Release Date: TBD (US); September 12 (UK); January 24 (AU)

Studio: Vertigo Films

Creating a modern police movie by resurrecting an obscenely popular cult 1970’s British TV classic is a risky move, but The Sweeney looks like it could be a blast. Ray Winstone plays iconic copper Jack Regan, while rapper-turned actor Plan B is his hard-as-nails partner. And if you were wondering about the title, Sweeney Todd is cockney rhyming slang for the police force’s Flying Squad.

Finding Nemo 3D

Release Date: September 14; March 29, 2013 (UK);  August 30 (AU)

Studio: Disney-Pixar

The 3D conversions of beloved classics seem to polarize people, but converting one of Pixar’s most striking, original and successful animated fables seems like a no-brainer. After all, who wouldn’t want to dive back into the big blue with Marlin and Dory, and as the sequel fast approaches, the re-release will be a good refresher.

Resident Evil: Retribution 3D

Release Date: September 14 (US); September 28 (UK); September 20 (AU)

Studio: Screen Gems/Sony

You know the drill by now. Milla Jovovich returns once more as Alice in the fifth instalment of videogame spin-off helmed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The trailer promises action, and lots of it, and if it turns out to be the director and star’s franchise swansong, here’s hoping they go out with a bang.

Stolen

Release Date: September 14 (US); TBD (UK, AU)

Studio: Millennium Films

Think Taken with a taxi and Nicolas Cage. The Ghost Rider star plays Will Montgomery, a master thief who becomes suitably annoyed when – upon being released from prison – he discovers that his former partner-in-crime has kidnapped his daughter and is holding her hostage in a hijacked taxi. Typical.

The Master

Release Date: Sept. 14 (US, limited); Sept. 21 (US, wide);  Nov. 9 (UK); Nov. 8 (AU)

Studio: The Weinstein Co.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest feature is sure to be one to watch come awards season. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Lancaster Dodd, a smart and charismatic guy who sets up a religious organisation – which may or may not be based on Scientology – following World War II. Sparks fly when he falls out with right-hand man Joaquin Phoenix, with both actors receiving early rave reviews for their work.

Rovio Announces Angry Birds Spinoff Bad Piggies

Rovio has announced Bad Piggies, an Angry Birds spinoff that lets you play as the pigs. Launching on September 27th, Bad Piggies will not involve the franchise’s trademark slingshot but will instead utilize “all new, never-before-seen gameplay.”

“There’s a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the Angry Birds games, and we’ve been constantly asked: what about the pigs’ side of the story?” said Rovio CEO Mikael Hed. “Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes.”

Bad Piggies will launch for iOS, Android and Mac, with PC and Windows Phone versions to follow.

“We’ve had a lot of fun creating a totally new and unique gameplay experience,” added Rovio Games executive vice president Petri Jarvilehto. “There’s so much more to these pigs than what is seen in the Angry Birds games, and Bad Piggies is the first glimpse into what’s going on in the imaginative and ingenious minds of the pigs.”

No Bad Piggies gameplay has been shown off yet, but you can keep an eye on the game’s official site for updates as they’re announced.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Dances to a Different Tune

With Tekken Tag Tournament 2’s September console launch fast approaching, it seemed possible that game producer Katsuhiro Harada would have already emptied the contents of his closet marked ‘surprise’ and wouldn’t have much else to reveal at Gamescom 2012. Clearly, I underestimated Mr Harada, as there were many more in-depth details about its World Tekken Federation stat tracker to show off, in addition to a whole new mode called Tekken Tunes.

World Tekken Federation (which for the sake of all concerned is best not turned into an acronym) is most simply thought of as the beat ‘em-up equivalent of Call of Duty Elite and Battlefield Premium’s stat tracking services.

“World Tekken Federation is based on Tekken Net, which links the arcade machines in Asia, and we really wanted to incorporate that level of statistical data for console too,” Harada explains. “The presentation style is geared towards the western market who are perhaps more used to FPS’.”

“

World Tekken Federation is based on Tekken Net, which links the arcade machines in Asia, and we really wanted to incorporate that level of statistical data for console too.

The online service tracks the stats of all of a player’s online battles and looks to provide not only vanity stats (such as the expected win/loss ratio for each character, favourite tag combinations and overall rank) but also more useful metrics that can be studied to help improve performance.

For example, it’s possible to find out what percentage of throw attempts made by other players are successful against you, helping to highlight whether the throw break technique should be practiced. The average time of rounds won and lost is also tracked, with a short duration for unsuccessful rounds suggesting that while you’re strong on attack your defensive strategies need work.

These areas can then either be practiced in offline mode in the Fight Lab or, as Namco Bandai is hoping, in conjunction with other players. This co-operation will happen either passively: through viewing the World Tekken Federation profiles of top players and watching replays of bouts, or more proactively: with more advanced players helping to coach new players by identifying where their game is falling down and advising which areas should be improved.

Particularly altruistic players can even buddy-up with less skilled players via the World Tekken Federation’s team structure. The creation of a team will enable the stats of each member player to be tracked and fed into an overall team rating, as well as offering a breakdown of how each member contributes to the team’s overall status. Team creation also provides access to a group forum and the opportunity to create a team name and emblem and to set goals for its members. In theory, this could lead to creation of quasi-guilds, with a couple of lead players heading up a team of lesser-skilled, up-and-coming players, each of whom has their own personal stats recorded as well as how great a contribution they are making to the progress of the team.

“

It’s great for players to have the freedom to incorporate their own tracks. At the same time the quality of the original soundtrack is very high and I’m confident that players will come to realise that it’s the best music to fight to.

The ultimate goal of World Tekken Federation is to make the game more accessible by using the stats and feedback as a training aid while encouraging progression through the distribution of service-based achievements, which offer an additional carrot to those taking a lot of stick. Of course, it also provides the savants with an awful lot of stats to pore over and they may already be salivating at the notion of compiling such a comprehensive stack of numbers. However, pricing details and any potential additional perks of the service, such as early or free access to DLC, are being held back until the week of Tekken Tag Tournament 2’s launch and so it’s too early for less hardcore players to decide whether the price of admission will be worth the potential benefit that they’ll gain from it.

During the presentation, Harada also introduces the notion of Tekken Tunes. Quite simply a customisable music service, Tekken Tunes not only allows players to assign any of the in-game stage or background music tracks to whichever part of the game they wish, but also to import custom tracks from an external source to replace any of the existing music in the game. Ever wanted to bust digital heads to the soundtrack from The Sound of Music or your one, ill-advised attempt at karaoke? Well, now you can. In addition, long-term Tekken fans will be pleased to hear that music from older titles in the series will be made available via the PS Store and Marketplace to download and replace the new tracks.

“It’s great for players to have the freedom to incorporate their own tracks,” offers sound producer, Kanako Kakino, before adding with a smile, “At the same time the quality of the original soundtrack is very high and I’m confident that players will come to realise that it’s the best music to fight to.”

World Tekken Federation and Tekken Tunes bolster an already burgeoning feature list, including Fight Lab, Combot, numerous customisable options, 2 Vs 2, and 2 Vs 1, and allow Tekken Tag Tournament 2 to offer an embarrassment of riches when it launches on PS3 and 360 next month. Whether this is your first Tekken or your eighth, Harada and co are working hard to ensure that there’ll be something here to help you fight harder, better, faster and stronger.

Torchlight 2 Gets a Release Date

Runic Games has announced that Torchlight II will release on Thursday September 20, 2012.

Company president Travis Baldree made the announcement on the official Torchlight II blog, meaning there's less than a month to go until the dungeon-crawling rival to Diablo III is available.

“

The official Release Date for Torchlight II is Thursday, September 20, 2012. Three weeks away!

"I don't think there's much else I could say that would interest you right now, so - the official Release Date for Torchlight II is Thursday, September 20, 2012. Three weeks away!" he said.

"We'll announce it 'more' officially and bigger tomorrow. You know first! Thank all of you for being an awesome and patient community, we look forward to getting this into your hands!"

Developed by the same creative masterminds behind Diablo I and II, the original Torchlight released in 2009 to positive reviews, though many criticised its lack of multiplayer support. As a result, the team have pursued peer-to-peer multiplayer for Torchlight II, and they plan to carry the knowledge derived from this experience with them as they begin work on the Torchlight MMO.

Torchlight II will be available both through Steam and in retail form in September.

Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Monster Hunter 4 Playable at TGS 2012

PAX hasn't even started. September isn't even here. Yet we're already hearing about games that will be presented at the 2012 Tokyo Game Show. Of note so far - two major 3DS titles that have yet to be announced for localization outside of Japan. For the first time, Level-5's Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney and Capcom's Monster Hunter 4 will be playable.

Andriasang has also reported on some basic statistics compiled by the show's organizers. No Wii U, Wii or DS content is scheduled to appear, but publishers have confirmed that 13 Nintendo 3DS games will be on display. That roster also includes Capcom's E.X. Troopers, an action game based on the hit Lost Planet franchise. Six Vita and five PSP titles are also confirmed to have a presence.

Keep in mind these listings don't include any titles that will be announced during or prior to the show. Additionally, Nintendo is preparing to unveil its Wii U launch plans during the month of September - it's likely details surrounding that platform's software will be unveiled then.

On the Brink of a New World of Warcraft

To prepare World of Warcraft players for the new content in Mists of Pandaria, patch 5.0.4 will be deployed before the expansion’s September 25 launch date and change around many major systems. This includes a dramatic overhaul of each class’ talent tree, condensing the current branching system into what Blizzard hopes is a better alternative, where every 15 levels you pick one of three talents to customize your class.

“Say I’m a fire Mage online today,” said Ion Hazzikostas, lead encounter designer. “I probably spent thirty-three points in the fire tree and twenty-eight or twenty-nine of those points are being spent on things like ‘oh, your fireball hits harder,’ ‘oh, you have pyroblast now.’ Those weren’t very interesting choices. Those weren’t really choices at all. They were just the things you were expected to spend. If you somehow managed to not take those, you were just hurting yourself. So we got rid of those, but we actually just gave them to you for free. So the player who logs in as a fire Mage is still going to be a fire Mage, is still going to have pyroblast. It’s not going to be a foreign, unsettling experience.”

The new talents are meant to let players make decisions without really hurting their combat efficiency. “I think they’re going to find some interesting choices that really let them set themselves apart and differentiate themselves from other players of the same class and spec in the game. If they want to be more mobile, if they want to be more defensive, if they want to have more offensive crowd control. They can customize themselves in a way that layers on top of what’s already in place.”

Changes to many of the classes, some of which are significant, will be rolled in with the patch as well to let players get familiar with the altered mechanics before Pandaria is released. “Some have really just had balance adjustments, got a couple new abilities, had some streamlining,” said Hazzikostas. “Others, such as the Warlock, have been more heavily overhauled. In all cases we take efforts to preserve a lot of the core that players expect and are used to with the classes.”

“I wonder about the Hunters and the removal of the ranged slot,” said John Lagrave, lead producer. “The bow is now the main hand. Whether the Hunters go, ‘what the hell, I need my polearm too.’ We’ll see.”

With so much changing, Blizzard also looked back at existing systems and in some cases made cuts in order to keep everything from spiraling into chaos. “We removed resistances from the game. There’s no elemental resists any more,” said Hazzikostas. “Years ago, you crafted resistance gear and that was part of the progression. You needed to get a full set of shadow resist gear before you could fight Mother Shahraz in Black Temple, but we haven’t made that type of gear in a while and it was just a buff that players cast. So we just assumed that you have Blessing of Kings and Mark of the Wild that gives you resist all. So you’re taking less damage from all these attacks, but you also have these five numbers on your character sheet that are adding to noise and really potentially confusing. So we took that out. That also means, though, if nothing else changes, you’re going to take about fifteen percent more damage from every elemental attack in the game, which means we go through and adjust those elemental attacks so we’re not making the game harder for players.”

“Suddenly you’re not just dead,” said Lagrave.

“That’s one of the great challenges of a game as expansive as World of Warcraft,” continued Hazzikostas. “It’s very difficult to just touch one thing without their being ripple effects that you have to take into account across the entire game.”

Also in the patch will be a Scenario, a new type of story-focused dungeon that doesn’t require the standard healer / tank / DPS group composition to complete.  Lagrave explained the Scenario will link the events in the existing world to the events of the soon to be added continent of Pandaria. “There’s a version for both the Horde and the Alliance, that starts the story of what has happened since the Destroyer’s end. After Deathwing’s fall, what does the world turn back to? Of course, the world turns back to hating each other. The Horde and the Alliance start fighting again.”

Then moving into Pandaria and beyond launch, Blizzard sees Scenarios as a better way to deliver focused stories. “As a vehicle it allows us to further along whatever plotline we want to go with,” said Lagrave. “We know that everyone will have a chance to see it because any three of us can queue up for a scenario and boom, we’re in. Three tanks can do it, three healers can do it, it doesn’t matter what your group composition is.”

“In many cases they occupy and expand upon a niche that previously might have been filled by some of our more involved outdoor quest experiences, events that were kind of multi-stage things,” said Hazzikostas. “Those can be very tricky to do in the open world where you have player interactions. In an instanced version of that, we can really set up a multi-stage quest event where this village is going to be attacked and you’re setting up defenses. We’ve done things like that in the open world before, we can give players a better experience when it’s an instanced version. Once we move away from the DPS, healer trinity as it’s called, players suddenly use all kinds of abilities they would never find an occasion to use in instances. You’re suddenly using CC [crowd control] all the time, because as a Rogue there isn’t someone to tank for you and something’s actually hitting you. So you stun it, you gouge it or you fear it. That gives the combat a very unique feel. We’re looking forward to expanding on the system in the future.”

Lagrave provided more detail. “The big challenge we had in outdoor events like that was, when those things go live you have fifty, a hundred people trying to do that event. So everybody’s trying to click on the NPC to get up the dialogue to get it started. It really is a cluster***. You don’t really have a sense of what’s going on because it’s more important for you to step through the process rather than enjoy the experience. Because if I don’t get going on this, all these people are going to stop me from progressing. [Scenarios] allow you, the player, to spend the time to go through the content at a reasonable pace and get what we’re trying to tell you.”

Blizzard has been making changes large and small over the course of the Mists of Pandaria closed beta testing period, which started up this past March. Blizzard found that the starting experience on the new continent of Pandaria, home to the Pandaren race and all the level 85 through 90 questing content, wasn’t quite up to the proper quality level. So during testing the beginning sections on Pandaria were closed off and Blizzard took one month to alter the experience to better reflect the growing animosity between Alliance and Horde. “Previously you just landed on the shore. Now you come in, depending on your faction, as part of a massive assault. Whether you’re in a gunship bombarding an Alliance encampment or you’re doing a strafing run in an Alliance gyrocopter on a Horde fleet, and you really get that feel of conflict between factions. You see one of the main themes of Pandaria is war, the consequences of war.”

Outside of the main questing content, Blizzard is adding plenty of extras into the game, such as a Pokemon-like pet battle system, which lets players create teams of pets and battle others. It’s a system build just for fun – battling with pets will not serve as a method of progression for your character – but even so, Blizzard has been balancing the gameplay to try and ensure it remains interesting for those excited to try it. “Our players are great about sitting there and hammering on a system and letting us know ‘this is broken’ or ‘this is way OP [overpowerd]. They love to tell us what’s OP,” said Lagrave.

“There was a cockroach that had an ability, I think it was called Apocalypse,” said Hazzikostas, “that basically killed everything after X turns. Everything that’s not a cockroach dies. And it’s like, ‘yeah ok, multi-target death touch is maybe not the most balanced ability,’ even if there’s a delay of a few turns. Sometimes, some our more creative ideas, that’s what play testing iteration is for.”

The cockroach Apocalypse ability has since been removed. “We have a ton of new pets in the game as well,” said Lagrave. “We want people to go out there and explore and  trap new pets and not just run after one thing.”

In case you’d rather take on something a little more grand in scale than a pet battle, Blizzard is also adding two outdoor world bosses to Pandaria. “They fill slightly different niches,” said Hazzikostas. “The Sha of Anger in Kun-Lai Summit is this massive, towering Sha. Whenever it’s up, you can see it from pretty much anywhere in the zone. It’s the size of a mountain.  That one actually respawns every two hours. It drops from a large random pool of raid loot and PvP loot, so it’s going to be attractive to all players regardless of play style, but it’s designed to be accessible because it respawns so frequently. You can only actually loot it once per week.”

“The other boss is Salyis’s Warband. It’s a band of saurok lizardmen that are riding on the back of a gigantic mushan. A mushan is a beast that’s unique to Pandaria, it’s kind of like a green lizard kodo. That is also pretty much the size of a small town. It has about a dozen lizardmen on its back and huge cannons that it uses to bombard villages in the Valley of the Four Winds. That respawns every three to five days. It has unique loot. We expect it to be very hotly contested. We look forward to seeing, particularly on PvP servers, how that’s going to play out.”

So what kind of group will you need to successfully take out the Warband? “It’s designed for a group somewhere around in the teens,” said Hazzikostas. But you’re going to want to bring more people because you want to kill it faster before someone else comes to gank you. You can have ten people fighting off the gankers while the rest of the people actually kill the boss. For the world bosses we’re also using our new loot system. That is personalized loot. Your chances of getting a reward for the target are independent of the number of people in the raid and class compositions. So if I’m a Paladin, it doesn’t matter if there are six other Paladins in this raid group with me. When I kill the boss, I get my own personal roll. If it’s a success, then I will get an item that’s usable by my spec. That means there isn’t an incentive to keep the boss to yourselves with the fewest number of people possible.”

Are you looking forward to pet battles and world bosses, or have you moved on from World of Warcraft?

Homeland: Season 2 Trailer

One of our favorite new series of 2011, Homeland returns for a second season on September 30th.

Showtime has just released a new trailer for the series -- an intriguing, completely dialogue-free preview, set to a cover of The Police's "Every Breath You Take" --  showing a lot of imagery from the new season, but leaving a lot of room to guess what exactly is going on and how it will play out. (That being said, beware of spoilers, since a lot is shown - though very out of context).
