Vin Diesel Could Be The Last Witch Hunter

Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel is now in negotiations to star in Lionsgate-Summit's The Last Witch Hunter.

The story, which was penned by Cory Goodman (Priest), is about the last remaining witch hunter, who is tasked with discouraging a group of witches and warlocks from reproducing. Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov was once set to helm the film when the pitch was first picked up, however, the filmmaker has since dropped out.

The Wrap reports that The Crazies' Breck Eisner is now attached to direct the film, with Adam Goldworm executive producing. Emmett/Furla Films will also produce.

Think Tank #2 Review

This is grand comic booking. Think Tank #2 is really, really great. Two issues in, and this series has me hook, line, and sinker. The story, the characters, the dialogue, the artwork, all of it is terrific. Whereever this series is going, I'm going with it. Get on board with Think Tank, folks. It's a book you need to read.

The story behind Think Tank is a semi-real one. Matt Hawkins builds a believable world, and he even puts notes at the end that explain the unbelievable parts (it's scary to read how much of this stuff really exists). That's great and all, but what makes Think Tank work is David Loren. He's the kind of character that you can't stop reading about. He's conflicted, brilliant, and a total a-hole. It's hard not to love him and that's what makes this series grab hold.

It's hard to not undersell Rahsan Ekedal's artwork. You have see it; to read it. His washy grey tones give the book a near perfect flow. Ekedal delivers the goods, panel after panel, page after page. This is a colorless book that will have you seeing red blood. His careful line work is so detailed, so wonderfully rendered, that you'll never notice that the world is so grey. Even if you have no interest in this story – and you really should have interest in this story, guys – do yourself a favor and stare at Ekedal's art for a moment or two. It's worth a stare.

Halo 4 spoiler alert: Has a major battle with the game's true antagonist already been blown by the game's own developers?

If any story ever seemed to exemplify the dangers of trying to be too clever when teasing your fans, it could be this one. Because unless this is all an elaborate red herring (and to be honest, there's a decent chance it might be), then Halo 4 developer 343 Industries might just have accidentally leaked a fairly significant page of the game's script all over the internet.

Originating in a post on NeoGAF (potential spoilers through that link obviously), the story goes that a raft of information regarding a (or potentially the) climactic battle with Halo 4's previously unconfirmed antagonist is visible during one brief shot in 343's recent "A Hero Awakens" documentary video. A re-watch and some judicious pausing reveals that the information is indeed present, via what appears very much to be a page from the game's mocap performance script.

Turning up at around the 3:55 mark, the page is only in focus on screen for the merest blip of time, but that didn't stop GAF user Slightly Live from digging out possible details of the identity of the game's primary enemy, some new abilities for Cortana, and a real sense of the new enemy's level of power. None of those details are going to be fleshed out on these pages for the sake of avoiding inflicting accidental spoilers, but interested parties can find them all on the original NeoGAF post, along with some more speculation driven by a currently unreleased (but heavily previewable on Amazon) Halo novel.

New Halo 4 Trailer Leaks Story Spoilers

A shot of Halo 4's script in the latest trailer for the game has been deciphered, revealing a number of story spoilers about the upcoming game.

The blurry shot was analysed by NeoGaf, and offers insight into what awaits players of Halo 4, as well as those who were planning on reading the tie-in novel The Thursday War.

As you can probably guess, there's going to be a fair few spoilers below.

Before we start exploring the spoilers, it's worth noting that these are almost completely guaranteed to be accurate. Aside from the shots in the video, Amazon's listing for The Thursday War allows potential purchasers to look inside the book at some of the pages. As well as corroborating what the script suggests, it also offers a whole heap on additional info on Halo 4's plot. Oops.

The game will supposedly start with Master Chief awakening aboard the Forward Unto Dawn as it's being boarded by a bunch of Covenant, who are looking for something other than the Chief. This is apparently an ancient Forerunner weapons cache, as well as details about where they can find an ancient Forerunner called Didact, whom they believe to be a living god.

While Didact will be the game's Big Bad, Halo Reach's Dr. Halsey will also appear to aid Cortana, who is deteriorating and now has the ability to project multiple versions of herself.

The game is also set to feature a climactic battle between the Chief, Didact and Cortana, details of which are fleshed out in the script:

  • Didact: "Compassion for mankind is misplaced."
  • Chief: "I'm not doing this for mankind." Chief then charges at Didact.
  • Cortana rushes towards Didact and jumps all over him (legs, arms, chest, back).
  • Several takes of "Cortana" tackling and climbing on random objects at full speed.
  • Didact is attacked by Cortana. He attempts to swat at Cortana as a means of self defence.
  • Didact unclenches his fist and drops Chief.

Though that's all we've gleaned so far, more details about Didact and his role can be found in the pages viewable from The Thursday War. These include:

  • "Don't you see it? Requiem. That's where the Didact was hidden. That's where they say he waits."
  • "He tried to fight the flood. He tried to destroy the humans."
  • "Didact sleeps and must never be woken."

There's been no word from 343 Industries on the leak as yet. You can check out the offending screenshot in the trailer below at around the 3.55 mark.

Halo 4 will release on Xbox 360 on November 6.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Announced

Square Enix has announced Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Set to arrive in 2013, Lightning Returns will incorporate “a brand-new story, world, characters and an enhanced gameplay system,” according to Square Enix. The game will feature Lightning as a solo playable character and allow her to freely roam a new world.

Other details regarding Lightning Returns are limited. We do know that the main story takes place hundreds of years after Final Fantasy XIII-2, set in a world called Novus Partus -- which is composed of four islands connected by monorail. The development team told IGN that three of the guiding pillars for the art direction in Lightning Returns are "gothic, mechanical and fantasy."

The most startling change to Lightning Returns comes in the form of the doomsday countdown. According to Square-Enix, the world will end after 13 days, and a massive clock will count down constantly in the corner of the screen to indicate this looming deadline. Any action players take, even taking the monorail from place to place, will spend time and hasten the end of days.

With Lightning as the only playable character, players will have unparalleled control over customizing her looks and combat style. The battle system itself, a greatly modified version of the previous two, will feature real-time elements including direct control of Lightning's movement and her attacks, as well as time-based moves that drain the doomsday counter. Lightning Returns will also include a real-time block system, designed to make battles much more active and time-based. Even dying mid-battle will activate a prompt to give players the choice to rewind their mistakes at the expense of the timer.

Lightning Returns was announced at today’s Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Event, which Square Enix has been teasing since last month. In early July, Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 director Motomu Toriyama hinted at the project, which entered production at the beginning of August, followed shortly by a teaser site.

Square Enix confirmed that Lightning Returns will be the final chapter of Lightning’s saga, which began in Final Fantasy XIII back in 2010. Lightning’s sister Serah was the focus of Final Fantasy XIII-2, which hit stores earlier this year and received downloadable content that continued Lightning’s story.

No other details have been announced, but be sure to check out Square Enix’s official Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII site for more updates as they’re revealed.

Sony Goes Biblical for Will Smith's Cain

Sony Pictures is moving forward with Will Smith's The Redemption of Cain, an epic interpretation of the Cain and Abel story.

The Wrap reports that the project has been green-lit and will begin production in July 2013. The film will shoot in London and Jordan, with exteriors shot in Morocco. The story, which was originally titled The Legend of Cain, has been described as a re-imagining of the Biblical sibling tale, but with a vampiric twist.

Smith was rumored to direct and star in the movie earlier this summer, but no word yet if this still the case. Smith's Overbrook Entertainment will produce.

The Apparition Review

You rarely expect “generic ghost story #4,301” to have a legitimately good plot or leave a lasting impression, but you’re in it for the quick and cheap thrill.  You’re supposed to feel your heart racing as tension builds up while the character walks into darkness, foolishly investigating a noise.  Then at some point… BAM!  You do your best to pretend you aren’t startled when you’re struck with a predictable jump scare (we’re all internet tough guys on the outside), but it’s still a thrill.

However, that’s not the case with The Apparition.  Simply put, it’s not scary at all.   Every now and then, a horror movie can still succeed without being scary, though.  John Carpenter’s The Thing isn’t especially frightening, but it’s still a superb film because it draws on other elements to freak you out.  Unfortunately, The Apparition brings nothing to the table to compensate for a complete lack of scares.  Unless you’re a Twilight fan that just wants to see Ashley Greene in her undies… then I guess you’ll get your money’s worth.

Despite the technical complexities behind it, the premise is actually very simple.  If enough people truly believe in something supernatural, it’ll come to fruition.  It’s kind of like how a Green Lantern Ring works… but, instead of making bright and awesome constructs with your mind, you’re opening the door for a ghoul that wants to destroy your life.  To prove apparitions exist, Ben (Sebastian Stan), Patrick (Tom Felton) and a few others conduct a college experiment.

The event works and they bring a rather pissed off creature into our dimension.  Ben abandons the whole situation and begins a cozy life with Kelly (Ashley Greene).  Elsewhere, his peers come to realize they’d make terrible Ghostbusters.  Said phantom proceeds to annoy all of the individuals involved, but we have the misfortune of observing Ben and Kelly’s mundane lives during the whole ordeal.

The characters, mainly Ben and Kelly, are frustratingly stupid and act like true horror victim stereotypes.  When it becomes abundantly clear the house is haunted, Kelly finally says something smart: she’s getting the hell out.   But, apparently her definition of a safe distance is just camping out in the backyard.  Needless to say, her brilliant plan isn’t a success.  Meanwhile, Ben knows it’s an intangible being, yet he walks around with a baseball bat.  You can’t hit what you can’t see or touch, slugger. the-apparition-20101123075123236

I lost track of how many times I groaned and face-palmed during the film and apparently, I wasn’t alone in this feeling.  The audience (and I) laughed at most of the scares, and a few of the lines were absolutely cringe-worthy.  If you do see it, I hope you appreciate the dog line as much as I did.

Director-writer Todd Lincoln treats us to an overabundant amount of establishing shots.  The first aerial shot or two were amusing, but seeing multiple views of the exterior of the home and neighborhood every other scene was excessive and tiring.  It really made the mere 82 minute run time feel much longer.  The basic premise holds the potential for some interesting possibilities, but Lincoln’s script tosses aside any and all cerebral points and goes straight for simplistic horror tropes.

To be brutally blunt, this isn’t a good movie.  It’s a horror movie that does nothing original and doesn’t even manage to scare you in the process.  If you enjoy laughing at bad movies with friends, then sure, have a good time watching it this weekend.  Otherwise, stay away.

Mad Men Star Joins Arrested Development

Mad Men's John Slattery will soon be joining the upcoming fourth season of Arrested Development.

While TVLine, who broke the story, notes that Slattery's character has yet to be revealed, they also add that the actor will be appearing in multiple episodes. Slattery will play one of several new characters to appear alongside the original cast.

Said executive producer Ron Howard of the show's return, "[Series creator] Mitch [Hurwitz] isn't trying to recreate something. It's been away for a while, and part of the fun that Mitch has been mining and exploiting is, what's new to discover about these people? What’s delightfully unchanged? He and the writing staff and the actors have a fantastic sense of that. They're pretty brazen, pretty bold and fearless. That's what made the show into something that fans really kept alive."

As announced back in November, Arrested Development will be returning with 10 new episodes to premiere all at once on Netflix sometime next year.

Captain Marvel #2 Review

The second issue of Captain Marvel is a pretty dramatic shift from the previous issue. This is a straight up time travel story that throws Carol into a World War II setting. That might seem a bit strange, but Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy make it work. This issue doesn't quite have the same heart and heft that the series started out with, but it's still a great comic book with a tight script and some gorgeous artwork. Captain Marvel is quickly becoming the Marvel title to watch. Or read, I guess. You know what I mean.

The use of time travel is an interesting choice, and once you get about half way through the issue you realize why it works for this story. Carol says it herself, when she notes why time travel is taking her out of her comfort zone, "You can't blast it, punch it, outrun it or throw it into space." This is not business as usual for Carol Danvers. This is a story that looks to grow the character and make her a different kind of hero. The dialogue is great, but the inner monologue is even better. The time we get to spend in Carol's head is worth the cover price alone.

The change in setting really suits Dexter Soy's art. Every page in this issue looks good, but it looks even better once we shift back in time. Once a group of female commandos burst on to the scene, you'll be sold. It looks absolutely awesome and it's the kind of thing that is really enhanced by Soy's dark, washy art style. If you didn't think he was a good fit for Captain America fighting Absorbing Man, then you might want to give his work a second chance here. It looks stunning.

This is a dark book, not in tone, but rather in style. Soy's art is heavy on shadows here. Blackness seeps into every page, covering the world and characters. It's a credit to the artist that after only two issues, it's hard to imagine anyone else drawing this series. I'll admit, I had originally been expecting a light and bright comic with Captain Marvel, but what we get is better. It looks better with Soy at the helm and all you naysayers need to suck it up and give this comic a look. I'm calling it; Dexter Soy is going to be a superstar.

If Captain Marvel continues on this path, DeConnick and Soy will have created one awesome new title for Marvel. It's engaging, fun, beautiful and different. This is not your typical superhero book, and that's exactly what makes it so great. It's nice to see a different kind of monthly title from Marvel. I have never been a Carol Danvers fan, but as long as Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy are handling her adventures, I'll be picking up every issue. Marvel needs to take more chances like this, because -- in the case of Captain Marvel, at least -- it has totally paid off.

X-Men #34 Review

Brian Wood’s first X-Men story arc was a fantastic surprise that exceeded expectations. I’m pleased to report that his next arc, Subterraneans, looks to be a worthy follow up. Events pick up right where they left off: the team is on the trail of the missing genetic material, Storm leads the team with firm authority, and Colossus is as insubordinate as ever.

Yes, I’m still nitpicking Colossus’s uncharacteristic behavior. It just doesn’t fit. I may have spent far too many years hearing him talk like a big lug with a Russian accent and so now hearing him articulate with such a nice vocabulary has me thrown off, but ultimately it’s what he’s saying that doesn’t fit, not just how he’s saying it. As far as the story goes, Psylocke and Domino’s induction into the cult has an excellent amount of mystery, tension, and humor. Only, wouldn’t the other cultists notice a the sudden appearance of a woman with chalk-white skin and a giant black spot around her eye? I get that she’s lucky, but come on.

Roland Boschi makes a fine replacement for David Lopez on art duties. His linework is not as clean as Lopez’s, causing some of his character’s faces to vary from panel to panel, but overall his style still fits the serious tone of Wood’s story. He has some great layouts where the art does not necessarily stop at the borders of each panel, allowing him to make the art flow right along with the pace of the narrative. If you’re tired of Avengers vs. X-Men disrupting your X-stories with crossovers, then Wood’s X-Men is the book for you.
